Christchurch Function Venues

I was given the job to find a venue for our staff Christmas party this year on a limited budget. It has proved very difficult this year with so many venues being damaged during the Canterbury earthquakes. I turned to Google and tried a series of searches; venues for hire in Christchurch; BYO venues for hire in Christchurch.

Tangley on Clyde

On my last search, private venues for hire in Christchurch, I found Tangley on Clyde, Boutique Bed and Breakfast www.tangley.co.nz.

I sent the online enquiry form off, and Janet phoned me back straight away to go through the options with me and to find out what we were after and our budget (she prefers to talk to people over the phone than to email backwards and forwards).

From this conversation Janet put together 3 different menu options for us to choose from, BBQ, Buffet and Finger Food Cocktail style. These were all done to $30 per head (they can cater to any budget) and were samples, Janet likes to use what is fresh at the time. The cost to hire the venue is $500.

Since they have beautiful grounds the planning group opted for the BBQ, with the option of changing it to the Buffet option if the weather isn’t suitable for a BBQ. They have a function room and the main living area of the house that they use for functions and set up a bar in the sun room in between the two.

Tangley on Clyde is a BYO venue and Janet likes to have the drinks delivered the day before or the day of the function so that they can have them chilled and setup for when the guests arrive.

Janet has been fantastic to deal with and I would recommend them to anyone who is looking for a venue hire. It has been hassle free.

Elevate Bar and Restaurant

Elevate offer a number of different menu options to choose from ranging from $14.50 – $27.50 per person for finger food. $43.00 – $49.50 per person for a seat menu. $42.00 – $63.30 per person for a buffet menu.

They have 2 different function rooms to choose from which can cater for up to 100 guests for cocktails (standing).

Elevate can also provide half and full day conference/seminar catering.

The Running Bull Bar & Grill House

The Running Bull has 3 function rooms  available for your social or business occasion.
The rooms feature:

  • 42”wall mounted plasma TV screens with laptop plug-in capabilities for data presentations
  • Whiteboards and markers, flipcharts
  • On-site functions coordinator
  • Heated outdoor area
  • Fireplace
  • Fantastic range of catering options available (eg. Morning & Afternoon Tea, Working Lunches, Buffet, Set Menus, Cocktail Canapes etc…)

Hinton’s Cafe/Restaurant/Function Venue

Hintons have two great venues to choose from for functions and events.
Their tasting room is available anytime for private functions or meetings

The tasting room has a lovely warm, rustic feel with an open plan lay-out, recycled brick wall and art work around the walls, opening onto a sheltered ‘Central Otago’ courtyard.

Then they have their café/restaurant which is available for private evening use.

The café/restaurant has cosy, intimate surrounding with wooden floors and panelling and soft colourings. A spacious verandah wraps around the outside offering additional space and a great flow out to the gardens and grapevines.

Both venues offer beautiful garden settings and lots of space to enjoy with your guests. The tasting room can hold between 28 and 100 people depending on the room set up.

They offer a range of different menu options from Buffet Breakfast, Lunches and Dinners, BBQ Lunches and Dinners and then Canapes for Dinner also priced between $24 and $50 per head.

Willowbank Wildlife Reserve

Perhaps not the first place businesses think of when planning an event, but Willowbank is well set up for corporate functions, parties, launches and other types of events. The Willowbank restaurant is available in the evenings and there is ample room for a marquee to be set up in the outdoor space. This is a unique venue, with great potential to be creative with your event. BBQ and picnic facilities are available with either BYO or catered options.

Black Cat Cruises Charter Hire

Another option if you are looking for something a little different, is to book a Black Cat charter in Lyttelton Harbour. Post earthquake, the regular Lyttelton Harbour Cruises are not currently running, but the catamaran is available for functions and parties with up to 70 guests.

Honeypot Cafe, 458 Colombo Street, Sydenham

The Honeypot was a Christchurch institution before the quake, located in Lichfield Street, but now has a new home in Colombo Street.

Many may not realise that the Honeypot is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as being licensed through till 3am, which is perfect for functions. Evening functions can be booked from 9pm through till 3am, with food, drinks and staff available. Rob the owner is also amenable to taking bookings for business meetings on Mondays, when they are closed for normal trading.
