Christchurch web development firm hairyLemon says it is taking sales to the next revenue level by delving into Silicon Valley.

Director Graham Dockrill said hairyLemon had just linked a significant new contract with San Jose-based Tag Design ä respected Silicon Valley industrial design company.

A domestic client had referred him to Tag Design, which consults to technology companies including Apple Computers and Trimble, a satellite communications group.
Ït’s quite exciting with the clientele that indirectly we shall be starting to rub shoulders with.” Dockrill said.

With 11 employees, hairyLemon expected to grow annual revenues of more than $1.2 million by 30 to 40 per cent in the year to March 2007, Dockrill said.

The revenue growth would be helped by the Tag Design work worth around $50,000o over an 18 month period, and other referrals.

Formed in 2000, hairyLemon is a former Deloitte Unlimited Fast 50 company, recognised for rapid growth. Apart from web design it is also involved in visual communication solutions, including branding and graphic design.

Dockrill said developing websites had become a commodity-type business, with hundreds of providers including two similar sized contemporaries in Christchurch - e2-Media and Cabbage Tree Creative. The directors of the three companies had a good relationship despite being competitors.

“We’ve resisted the temptation to churn out cheap websites at a fast rate, and instead target businesses where quality production and good service are important,”
he said.

The name of the company was a hangover from student days. “Before we started, we were having drinks with friends and the name hairyLemon came up.”

”I remember saying if we ever have our own company that’s what we’ll call it,” Dockrill said.
